I often wonder why so many children are homeless or don’t have the proper means to live. You would think that if someone has a child they would take care if it under any circumstances, right? Wrong. Many children have gone through foster care or ended up living with a sibling. This happens when the parents can’t take care of the child properly or do not want the child. I have a cousin whose children are in my grandmother’s custody, she’s had them for ten years. During my service learning project, I’ve realized how this can impact a child during their life. Kids don’t understand why things happen to their parents or family. Tragic events can occur where a parent may have passed away or may be in prison. Schizophrenia is ranked the worst type of mental disorder; Personality disorder is ranked as number two. Schizophrenia affects a person’s ability to think, behave and feel clearly. Borderline personality disorder is an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image and behavior. All Mental disorders are important and stand with the same significance in my opinion. The children that I worked with during my project have been through traumatizing events at such a young age. I am 24 years old and don’t think I would have an easy time losing a loved one, I can’t imagine how this impacts a child. Children handle traumatic events different from adults. I think this is true because most of the time it’s there first time dealing with a traumatic or life changing event. Without someone to talk to about their problems and experiences it can cause a social isolation and problems dealing with there emotions. I saw this first hand visiting with a child that was dealing with abandonment. He was very shy and didn’t say much. You could tell he didn’t fell comfortable talking to someone about what he was dealing with. Most children with PTSD show anxiety, and trouble discerning dreams from reality and vivid bizarre
