Sophocles was able to illustrate the major theme of loyalty during the play through Antigone’s constant obedience to both her family and Thebes, in despite of the fact that she did not follow the king’s edict. When Antigone had just generated her plan to bury her brother, she already displayed the adequate traits of a loyal individual because of her determination to follow through with it in spite of the fact that others were attempting to persuade her not to. In addition, she knew the possible consequences of completing that action. The king confronts Antigone to ask her whether or not she was the one to blame for her actions, and while she could have told a fib, she was instead loyal to both her family and the state by being truthful.
