Title: Anterograde Amnesia PURPOSE: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to know the causes and effect of anterograde amnesia as well as the method used to treat anterograde amnesia patient. INTRODUCTION: Do you ever wonder how your life would change if you could not remember your childhood, or if you can't form new memories? Well if you had amnesia, those possibilities might become a reality. There are several types of amnesia but the two most common types are anterograde amnesia and retrograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is condition of losing part of your past memories. In contrast, anterograde amnesia is condition of difficulty in making new memories. The second factor that can cause anterograde amnesia is alcoholic intoxication. According to Health.com by Rachel Barclay, stated that excessive short-term alcohol consumption can cause blackout, a temporary form of anterograde amnesia. Studies show rapid increases blood alcohol level in short period of time can cut off the ability of the brain to transmit short-term memories during intoxication. According to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, out of 772 undergraduates, about 51% of excessive drinking students experiences blackout and cannot remember what they did at some point in their lives. C. Anterograde amnesia also can be drug-induced such as the use of benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines cause an impaired to the long-term memory. The memory loss occurs because data are not transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory and thus cannot be stored into memory storage. III. There are several methods that can be used to treat amnesia disorder thus, help amnesic patients to cope with their memory impairment. A. The first method is by cognitive rehabilitation method. Professor of Clinical psychology and Neuropsychology, Linda Clare stated that rehabilitation enabled disabled people to obtain their optimum physical, mental, social and vocational well-being. This method may be useful as the learning strategies for the patient to adapt with memory disorder. B. The second method is by technological assistance. According to Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, many amnesia patients find that the uses of smart technologies such as smartphone or tablet devices are helpful for them to do daily tasks. Moreover, smartphones can be programmed to remind them to take a medication or remind them about any important events. The uses of memory aids such as notebooks, or photograph of people and places also may be helpful for them. C. Last but not least, nursing homes or other extended care options may be needed if the person is unable to look after
