The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has impacted the lives of millions of people, including children, that once lived in their developing home country to be forced out to be able to escape natural disasters, prosecution, to escape from war, etc. The UNHCR has participated actively during the aftermath of the Second World War, during the Hungarian Revolution and so on. The UNHCR was created to protect these innocent lives and with the contribution from Angelina Jolie holding the title as the Goodwill Ambassador representing UNHCR, UNHCR would receive more attention due to Jolie’s fame and support. Angelina Jolie Angelina Jolie was born on June 4th, 1975 in Los Angeles, California. At a very young age, she studied at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute and later attended New York University and completed her coursework in 1993 (Famous People You Didn't Know Went to NYU). Over the years Jolie has become a humanitarian, activist, and goodwill ambassador of UNHCR. As a result of drawing attention to global issues and making headlines of her work to obtain aid for refugees in countries that are developing, in 2005 Jolie was granted the Global humanitarian action award from the United Nations Association for her activism on behalf of refugee rights (A&E Networks Television).…show more content…
When Jolie visited Cambodia she has encountered refugees, displaced people, without having full knowledge about what a refugee goes through and what makes someone a refugee. Jolie wanted to understand what else was happening in the world and to understand what it means to be a refugee. Ever since she has been offered to be the Goodwill Ambassador of UNHCR, she has encountered many physically and mentally damaged civilians; young children with both legs and arms cut off.
