How does harper lee explore the themes of fear and bravery in the novel of to kill a mocking bird.
To Kill a Mocking Bird, written by Harper Lee, is an amazing story which discusses prejudice and racism. The story is written in the civil rights era but is set in the great depression. The narrator is a child named jean. She guides us through the story, seeing things from her perspective. The author uses specific techniques to explore the themes of fear and bravery. The author explores the theme of fear in the novel through making tension and slowing the tempo of the story. The Radleys place was the main setting that gave all the kids fear. They made up rumors which build tension, when the kids started…show more content… Atticus, jeans father, feared for his kids the rumors and name calling. Jean was always mocked of and the other kids called her father a “nigger lover” because he was defending a black man in a white society. The communities showed hoe people feared of change and feared of standing for their rights and still on this very day we see the same thing.
The author explores the theme of bravery through these two characters Atticus and Miss Dubose. Atticus sends his kids to Miss Dubose to learn something from her. She was a brave women, she didn’t care about anybody or anything. She shouted what’s on her mind and never cared about what people thought. Miss Dubose was addicted on a medicine but because she didn’t want to depend on anything in her life she stopped it and she died. Atticus is a man who is educated and humble. He taught his son jem the he doesn’t need a gun to be a man. Atticus defends Tom Robinson the black man who was accused of rape. Atticus defends him knowing he had the choice not to but he did.
