The Compromise of 1850 proved to be another temperary solution to a much bigger problem. As tensions grew between Texas (which the rest of the South backed) and the Federal Government over the boarder of Texas and New Mexico grew, the South started having talks of secession (evident by the Nashville Covention of 1850). President Taylor thought these talks were a bluff from the South. Henry Clay (who unretired) and Daniel Webster decided to make another compromise to sooth tensions.
