Eliot Asinof’s Eight Men Out begins on a sunny day in Cincinnati on October 1, 1919, hotels and streets stuffed with people all thinking about the same thing on their minds the World Series. This years championship puts the Cincinnati Reds, considered a non contender at the beginning of the season, against the one of the best teams in history of the sport of baseball, the Chicago White Sox. The Reds who surprised everyone, were able to host their first World Series in franchise history. 30,511 people packed into Cincinnati’s Redland Park for game one of the series, as the White Sox players adorned the field, it would be the last time they would be referred to as White Sox. As the trial began in Chicago for throwing the World Series signed confessions from Cicotte, Williams, and Jackson were stolen clearing their names. Conveniently Cicotte, Williams, and Jackson recanted their confessions, clearing the case and the jury decided not guilty on all charges. This upset commissioner Landis who was also a federal judge. Landis felt like the eight players had cheated the legal system and to get back at them he banned them from life. This was unfair and just a reaction from a hardnose judge. Weaver was not even in on the fix and telling on gangsters, gamblers, and his own teammates could been threatening to his well being. Not to mention Weaver’s World Series statistics were as good as they get batting .324 with eleven hits and not committing a single error in the field. With those kind of statistics it gives credablitly to Weaver who has always claimed he never had anything to to do with the fix.As for Jackson it was never proven that he accepted money in behalf of the fix and also was the best hitter throughout the series, batting .375 and also playing perfect in the field. After ninety-four years it is time to free Jackson and Weaver. People have always have a hero they looked up to, in ancient times it was war heros today it is pro athletes.
