Throughout American history, we as a culture have influenced several ideas amongst different groups of people. In “Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Woodstock” Alexie argues how the American culture influence surrounded his father and family. Alexie wrote this to expose how the American culture is negatively influencing Native American families. Three examples of this would include the influence of Jimi Hendrix, the loss of tradition, and the father’s alcoholism. In the end, Alexie uses personal history to put on display the impact of American culture on Native American families. For example, “I remember the first time your mother and I danced,” my father told me once. “We were in this cowboy bar. We were the only real cowboys there despite the fact that we’re Indians. We danced to a Hank Williams song…” (Alexie 328). This is a piece of textual evidence of how instead of dancing and listening to songs of their Indian heritage, they would rather be encouraged to follow more of the traditions of American culture. In addition, Victor’s family loss various amounts of tradition due to the level of how much Americanized culture they were exposed to on the time inside and outside of the reservation. Therefore, by Native Americans families having the opportunity to leave or escape their current reservations they are able to experience and encounter more than one American tradition in their time away.
