This paper correlates the movie America to The Multidimensional Approach, two theories, The Life Course Perspective, Piaget’s Cognitive Theory, and Implications for my Social Work practice. In the movie, “America”, the multidimensional approach can be seen, by its three dimensions of Person, Environment, and Time. The multidimensional perspective points out that human behavior is influenced by several factors related to many dimensions. These dimensions not only interact dynamically, but also change over time. America had been in many foster care places and now at the treatment center was his last chance because he was going to 'age' out. He would be turning eighteen and there would be no more free institutions to help him except maybe the prison system. If it wasn't for Maureen Brennen the counselor at the treatment center America would of likely fast tracked right into the prison system. The article “ Bringing Psychology to the Marginalized: Exploring the Role of Community-Based Counseling”, points out, “This paper presents the challenge of marginalization and proposes a community-based counseling approach to helping marginalized communities”. If America would have been in a better foster care he would not have been traumatized as much. His mother left him and his two brothers in an old dirty apt., and took off and did her drugs, and then America was put into different foster care homes that didn't qualify to take care of him. He was abused by a man named Reggie. And then the system failed him again when he tried to kill himself at one of the institutions he was in. It was a good thing one of the staff happened to be walking by. This leads to the next domain of
