Furthermore what is interesting about Julia and Clarisse is that they are shown as parallels to the other women in Winston and Montag’s journeys. Katherine, Winston’s former wife and Mildred, Montag’s wife are also instrumental in leading them to rebel and even act eagerly to listen and be influenced by Julia and Clarisse. Though Katherine and Mildred can be seen as affecting the protagonists in a negative way by repressing and depressing them, they both represent the ideal product of the government and therefore influence Winston and Montag to question and hate towards the Party/society, the shallowness of people and what their personal lives have come to and desire to change. Winston expresses his hate for Katherine quite directly, exclaiming how he despises her devotion and how she essentially made him feel and live; (add quote). Winston’s frustration with Katherine results in his frustration sexually, emotionally and with the Party, developing his want to rebel and his later rebellious acts with the prostitute and more specifically, Julia. Whereas Katherine uses sex as a duty to the Party, Julia used it as rebellion.
