Alvarez’ and Tan’s experiences are similar and different in many ways. They are similar because they are both told in the same point of view. They are both told in first person, which is when it’s the main character that is telling the story, and they are in the story. When a story is first person point of view, it uses I very frequently. Another similarity is that both parents know two languages, in Mother Tongue the parent can speak Chinese as well as English, and in Names/Nombres the parent can speak Spanish and English.
