August 15, 2015 marks the seventieth anniversary of World War II when Japan officially pulled out of World War II. However, Japan acknowledges the end a week earlier, on August 5 and August 9, the days when the United States dropped two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The anniversary showcased a memorial service and also acknowledged Japan’s colonization and war actions. Part of the memorial service was dedicated to Japan giving apologies the two other East Asian countries: China and Korea (primarily South Korea) and also to those in the South East Asian countries and the Philippines. The memorial service included Prime Minister Abe offering an official statement and apology towards those regions and Japan’s own Emperor, Emperor Akihito also offering an apology. Both China and South Korea agree that Japan’s attempt to apologize is a crippled start to repair relationships. Also in the Philippines, eighty-five year old Remedios Tecson, a Filipino comfort woman during World War II, protested in front of the Japanese Embassy and held up a sign that demanded an “unequivocal apology from Japan” and expected more of an apology from prime minister Shinzo Abe (Seattle Times). Contrasting China and South Korea, the Philippines said that it had “rebuilt” its friendship with Japan and hopes to see better days ahead between the two
