CHALLENGES TO OBTAIN RELIABLE DATA FROM DRILL CUTTING Analyzing the drill cuttings is one of the methods used to obtain data from petro physical values. The information collected from drill cuttings is important in understanding formation properties. In the process of gathering the reliable information that is needed while drilling, there are a few challenges that oil and gas companies face. But, with the advancement of petroleum technologies, these problems can be overcome. It is a necessity for oil and gas companies to solve the challenges to enable a successful development of an oil field. CAVING AND WELLBORE INSTABILITY Borehole instability is the undesirable condition of an openhole interval that does not maintain its gauge size and…show more content…
It need to travel from the bit, up to through the annulus, and end up at the surface. It is of the utmost importance to know the exact depth that all drill cuttings samples and gas are coming from within the borehole. The most accurate method is to inject a tracer of some sort into the drilling fluid stream at the surface and time its exit as it is circulated out. Because there is a time difference between when the rock is first broken away from the formation and when the sample is caught at the surface, all cuttings samples should be “lagged” or adjusted to the proper depth. In addition, the time taken for it to be transferred to the shale shakers should be also considered. On the other hand, obtaining the samples, analyzing, interpretation and the results may even further prolong the data from being distributed to the drillers. It is essential that the results come at a shorter time to enable any changes that needs to be done due problems detected from the…show more content…
Laboratory work has demonstrated that drilling at an inclination angle greater than approximately 30° from vertical poses problems in cuttings removal that are not encountered in vertical wells. The formation of a moving or stationary cuttings bed becomes an apparent problem, if the flow rate for a given mud rheology is below a certain critical value. The amount of cuttings traveling upwards in the annulus will affects drilling and hole-cleaning performance due to a phenomenon referred to as “hydraulic lift”. A sudden increase in the amount of hydraulic lift can denote pack off in the annulus or warn about wellbore-cleaning inefficiency. The low ability in managing hole cleaning performance will soon affect the value of data
