His child was the unlucky one of the tragedy of what happened. So this man decided it was time to change the whole world. Adam Walsh was a six year-old boy and he was born on November 14, 1974 in Hollywood, FL, but died on October 27, 1981, a short life ended too soon. His father, John Walsh, worked at Paradise Grand Hotels and Adam’s mother, Reve Walsh, was a stay-at-home mom. There used to not be a system for parents to report children that were taken or abducted. If there was a child missing, it would be reported in the newspaper or parents would notify the local police. At that time, the police had little resources to help in the missing children's case. But John Walsh decided that enough was enough. What happened to his son made him furious. Adam Walsh was kidnapped in a Sears store while Revé was looking for a lamp on sale. She left him with a group of kids admiring a new Nintendo game. Then he was kidnapped in broad daylight by Ottis Toole. “Our baby’s dead,” said John Walsh walking into their room (Standiford 56). The FBI didn't want to get into searching for missing children. The FBI said, “Local agencies have more mobile manpower” (Standiford 240). The police found his remains two weeks later in a canal. In 1982, Congress elected the Missing Children Act to send information to the FBI to search for missing children. They had enough with the abductions from Etan Patz being kidnapped on 1979, and Adam Walsh abducted from a Sears store on 1981. The Walsh’s persistence by keeping Adam’s tragedy in the spotlight changed parents’ perception on their kids’ safety. On July 27, 2006, President George W. Bush signed the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. This act protected children from sexual exploitation and violent crimes and also honored Adam Walsh and the other victims. This impacted parents and children nationwide. Parents now had a place to go to report their missing children.
