Community policing is a systematic approach to policing with the paradigm of instilling and fostering a sense of community, within a geographical neighborhood, to improve the quality of life. It achieves this through the decentralization of the police and the implementation of a synthesis of three key components: (1) the redistribution of traditional police resources; (2) the interaction of police and all community members to reduce crime and the fear of crime through indigenous proactive programs; and (3) a concerted effort to tackle the causes of crime problems rather than to put band-aids on the symptoms (Somerville, 2009).
