In John Knowles’ novel A Separate Peace, Finny acts like a leader by being persuasive, caring, and creative. Finny tends to show creativeness in a situation that needs it which creates him as a leader image. He can be caught caring for others a lot which allows him to be called a leader. Both a leader and Finny can often be found to possess the trait of persuasiveness. Finny is frequently perceived as a persuasive person which a leader is known for. For example, Finny explains to Mr. Prud’homme why Gene and him misses dinner by saying “The real reason, sir, was we just had to jump out of that tree. You know that tree . . . We had to do that, naturally, because we’re all getting ready for the war” (22). Others follow a leader, like Finny,…show more content…
First, he breaks the swimming record at Devon without any attestations and says “I’m not going to do it again. I just wanted to see if I could do it. Now I know. But I don’t want to do it in public” (44). He shows too much care for others to take somebody else's accomplishment away from them and call it his own, which only a leader would not dream for the public announcement claiming he beat the record. One day, Gene’s one big test was coming up, so Finny tells Gene to stay home and study rather than go to the Super Suicide Society meeting. Finny displays leadership by hoping and caring that Gene receives the good grades he desires. Furthermore, when Gene and Finny sleeps at the beach the one day Finny informs Gene that he loves him. Only a leader that possesses the trait of caring, like Finny, would notify to a friend that they have a feeling of affection regarding him and people will follow those who make them feel good about themselves. As an example, he once thinks of a creative idea to say that the pink shirt his mother gave him, he is wearing as an emblem towards the war. Only a leader, like Finny, would develop such a creative idea to relate it to the war as an emblem. In addition to, Finny one day does not want to play the absurd sport badminton, so he invents a sport with a medicine ball that evolves around all his talents named blitzball. Finny, as a leader, creates sports and activities in the matter seconds, so all will have fun. In conclusion, Finny establishes a plan for him to train Gene for the Olympics and vocalizes “Leave your fantasy life out of this. We’re grooming you for the Olympics, pal, in 1944” (117).
