In the “Moral Waiver” episode from Lie to Me broadcast on the Fox Network between 2009 and 2011. A moral waiver is an action by the United States armed forces that allows them to accept recruiters that might have a criminal record. In this episode, the audience can see the relationships in The Lightman Group starting to develop. Unlike the “Pilot” episode were it only followed Cal Lightman and Gillian Foster, the audience gets to know more about Ria Torrez and Eli Loker. In the “Moral Waiver episode two cases were brought to Cal Lightman and his team of experts, one dealing with a solider claimed to have been raped by a staff sergeant, and the other a basketball player accused of taking a bribe from a wealthy booster. While Cal watches Ria interview Lake, he notices a “gestural slip” which means she’s lying. Although she lied about the assault, the reports filed against Sergeant Scott was true. But before Lake was interview by Ria, Sergeant Scott passed the Army’s polygraph test. Cal brings in women who served with Lake and Scott, but showed no emotion when watching Lake’s testimony. After reading Sergeant Scott report and learning that he got a moral waiver. They wouldn’t have known that one of the charges as arson, which has a correlation to rape. Cal figures out that a woman named Rebecca filed a sexual harassment report against Sergeant Scott before she left the army. Rebecca is scared no one will believe her, but Cal requests the Army’s polygraph test. Rebecca passes the test with the help of Cal, who give her Valium beforehand which kept Rebecca calm through the questioning. Although Lake lied about herself being raped by Sergeant Scott. She believed that she was doing to right thing in protecting the other women from Sergeant Scott, so that included lying to protect
