The Yankee Stadium Clayton McShane Kraig Knutson CON 101 28 April 2015 Abstract One of the most historic stadiums in baseball history was the original Yankees Stadium. As being one of the oldest stadiums in the game, Yankees Stadium was home to 27 World Series’ won. Opening on April 18, 1923, this stadium was the home field of the New York Yankees until September 30, 1973, then renovations took place. After two years of renovating, the Yankees were able to play in their home field from April 15, 1976 to September 21, 2008. Yankees Stadium was later demolished in 2009-2010 after their new stadium was completed in 2009. Although this extraordinary building was mainly for baseball, it has hosted boxing matches, professional football games, college football games, soccer matches, concerts, and other historic events. As for boxing, the first match was fought on July 24th in 1923 in front of 60,000 fans between Benny Leonard and Lew Tendler. In July of 1927, Jack Dempsey and Jack Sharkey also boxed in the stadium. Other fights were also held at Yankee Stadium until the year 1973, when Muhammad Ali defended his heavyweight title against Ken Norton. This was the only boxing championship held at Yankee Stadium. Football games were also played at Yankee Stadium for many years. The first college football game played was between Syracuse and Pittsburgh on October 30, 1923. Notre Dame also played Army at the stadium from the years 1928 until 1947. As for professional football, the New York Giants played their home games at the stadium for 18 football seasons. The most famous football game played at Yankee Stadium was the NFL Championship game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants. The Colts came back to tie the Giants then later win in overtime. This was the first NFL playoff game to go into overtime, earning its name “The Greatest Game Ever…show more content…
While the modernization renovations took place for two years, the Yankees played their home games at Shea Stadium, the home field for the New York Mets. A big part of this renovation was to remove the numerous steel columns, which helped support the upper two decks and the roof of the stadium. Another major part of this renovation was to replace the old wooden score board with a 560-foot long electronic scoreboard. This new scoreboard stretched across the rear of the bleachers in the outfield. Along with the changes mad within the stadium, the Yankee Stadium’s exterior design changed dramatically, too. The builders decided to add three sets of escalators to get people from ground level to the second and third level seating. The escalators were placed at each of the three entrances of the stadium.
