William Kidd is a very famous pirate he first was a privateer and turned to piracy shortly after. William Kidd was born in 1654 in Dundee, Scotland, Kidd’s father John Kidd was a seaman so he followed in his father’s footsteps and set to sea when he was young. Kidd worked on a number of buccaneer crews in his early life and became the sea captain of his first ship the Antigua, and by the 1680s Kidd was a well-known privateer. In the 1680’s Kidd sailed to America to begin a fresh start, shortly after stepping foot on American soil, he ended up in New York, where he met and married Sarah Bradley Cox a wealthy widow. When France and England got into war Kidd was appointed as a privateer to defend English ships in the Caribbean from French attacks. Kidd pulled off one the biggest acts of piracy known to man and almost got away with it. Kidd enjoyed success throughout the 1690’s due in large part to the French and English war. Kidd’s crew now consisted of only 16 men. Kidd only choice now was to sail the Quedagh Merchant. Kidd renamed the Quedagh Merchant the Adventure Prize and set sail to the Caribbean.
