The Eagle is a 2011 film set in Roman Britain directed by Kevin Macdonald, and Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, and Donald Sutherland are the stars. The movie is based on the book The Eagle of the Ninth which was published in 1954. The story is based on the Ninth Spanish Legion's supposed disappearance in Britain. The movie begins in the year AD 140, twenty years after the Ninth Legion disappeared in North Britain. Marcus Flavius Aquila, a Roman soldier, arrives in Britain to serve. Marcus’ father disappeared 20 years earlier with the eagle so Marcus chose North Britain as his first post to hope to get the eagle back. Marcus and Esca continue to travel north until they are found by the Seal People. Esca makes up a lie and tells the tribe that Marcus is his Roman slave. Esca is welcomed to the tribe on behalf that they have never heard of a Roman slave. After several days of Esca hanging out with the Seal People, he and Marcus plot to find the eagle and leave. Just as they find the eagle they are attacked by several of the Seal warriors and the chief of the tribe. I learned that the time period of the Roman Empire was a very dangerous time to live and that the empire was constantly being under attack by outside forces. No wonder the empire eventually fell. The primary function of Hadrian's Wall was to keep out the Picts. The Picts were a tribe from modern day Scotland.
