From Wheatley’s poem, the speaker use of certain words accentuates the impact of migration through slavery. Line 1 (“ ‘TWAS mercy brought me from my Pagan land”) gives an insight that the speaker is moved against her will from a place she calls “my Pagan land” (1) that must have been a place she calls home. Also, this indicates that she was brought to a place that feels foreign to her, and her sense of journey is present in these words. The word mercy in this context could also mean her fortunate arrival to the new place she has being brought to, after the horrific experience she of her journey. Line 5 (“‘Some view our sable race with scornful eye’”) shows that the speaker belongs to the black race, and there is discrimination against her race
