In The Leaving, Sylvie always thought that she will have a similar life to her mothers. She never thought of completing school and heading off to university. On the other hand, Elizabeth, the mother of Sylvie, wanted her daughter to live a life that was different from her own. So she took Sylvie off the farm and showed her the world that was beyond the farm. Elizabeth shows Sylvie that she can have a better life, rather becoming a housewife. Knowing that there is a bigger world beyond the farm, Sylvie ventured out on her own and lived a life she wanted. My mom is a like Elizabeth, she immigrated to Canada so that her future children wouldn’t live a life like hers. When my mom was a child, she had to stay home to do chores around the house.
