Meadowcroft Rockshelter Archeological Site

Meadowcroft Rockshelter is an archeological site in Southwestern Pennsylvania (1). It is located on the north bank of Cross Creek, a tributary of the Ohio River, near Avella in Washington County. The shelter's 90 foot wide opening faces due south to a heavily forested and slightly mountainous landscape (2). Excavation of the site started in 1973, and, based on radiocarbon dates, it has been estimated that it was occupied between 12 and 16 thousand years ago (1).
Along with 150 fire pits, a few thousand stone flakes and tools have been found (1). 50 complete tools were among the stone remains (3). Flint from Ohio, jasper from Eastern Pennsylvania, and shells from the Atlantic coast were also found; these findings suggest that the people
