Film Damn Yankees During the time that Fosse was an artist, he was characterized for having a modern style. He has a signature that could not be mistaken. In the film “Damn Yankees” Bob Fosse expresses his style of isolation and extensions. Due to his scoliosis as a child his dances were based on isolation that were simple but the contractions were harder. Fosse is best known for his signature jazz style, which includes hip rolls, finger snapping, turned-in toes and distinct gestures. One of the early dances featured in the film express celebration on making Joe famous. The style of the dance seemed to be a mixture of ballet and jazz. Similar to the excitement of a child receiving a present the jumps seemed to be of happiness. The movements showed arm, leg and foot isolations and extensions as well as knee bending. The tempo of the songs made them speed up or slow down showing there emotions such as joyous for having a valuable player on the team.…show more content…
The main character Joe is stiff because he feels as if he is betraying his wife through the process of seduction by the devils wife. The woman is dancing around the room using isolation of her body. The mood is evil as the devil promised him a “real sexy baby” and turns sensual as he meets the girl. She is slowly taking of sections of her costume to show the isolations and movements of certain body parts. The Latin dance known as Mambo in “Who’s got the pain” shows contractions of the torso and extension of the arms and legs. In the movie they use hats which Bob Fosse started to incorporate in his dances when he started to go bald.He uses Both hip and shoulder rolls that appear frequently.
