Sharp began his first of four tours in the Appalachians in 1916 with colleague, Maud Karpeles. Travel was challenging, but Sharp was energized by the prospect of discovering “lost” [English] folk music in America. Within the first two weeks of his fieldwork in Tennessee and Kentucky, he had recorded almost one hundred folk songs. He was delighted to find that these people were so similar to the English. However, Sharp and Karpeles later discovered that there was a difference between the English and the Americans, and this was that music for the Appalachian people was just an everyday occurrence. There were no planned performances. Music was just something everyone participated in as they went about their lives. Gold and Revill draw attention
