A World of Cruelty; Gabriel Garcia Marquez Story of Humanity Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a famous novelist, short story writer, and journalist is well known throughout Latin America. He won the Noble Prize in Literature and has written many books that have inspired people. One of his stories that have been a curiosity to people is, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings; A Tale for Children. Many have also wondered why the title says a tale for children. Marquez uses strong imagery to show his audience his perception of humanity and the reason this story is titled for children. Marquez’ perception of humanity in this story is clear. He gives us the picture of the community versus the old man or the angel. Marquez states, “…before going to bed he dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the wire chicken coop” (218). All of the characters behave like children. They don’t stand up for their own beliefs. Each character has decided to be stubborn and not help the old man. They act like children by not wanting to be more thoughtful and respectful. They treat the old man with disrespect, which is not a very adulthood thing to do. They all treat him like nothing, “…tossing him things to eat through the openings in the wire as if he weren’t a supernatural creature…” (Marquez 219), this depicts the cruelty shown towards the old man. Another scene in the story is when the spider lady tells her tale of her disobeying her parents, which makes the town forget about the old man, believing he was also punished. This relates to a child when their parents tell them to do this and that, eventually they will obey and if they tell them about something they will believe them because they are the parents and what they say is right.
