Day after day, we face various decisions, some easier than others. In Immanuel Kant’s text, “What is Enlightenment?”, the reader is able to grasp the concept of the reason mankind is able to proceed to the path of maturity from his perspective. Kant is able to construe our modern day definition of immaturity into a simpler structure. This text is able to truly dissect where we obtain our interest in becoming our own person. Not only does he capture the many examples that adolescents face as they reach their peak to adulthood, but he is also able to show why some do not mature. Nevertheless, our perimeters are constantly put to test. As a child we are taught right from wrong and vice versa. However, as a teenager all the decisions that are made are based off what you were taught as a child. Therefore, technically it is not a decision of one’s own, but rather a conscious decision of what has been repeatedly put into their minds as a child. As one continues to make “decisions” for oneself they are often put into bad positions; jail, arguments, failing a test, going out too late, speaking to a stranger, or even, crossing the road on a red light. All the bad decisions that we make often time have a bad result therefore, leading us to be afraid or timid to make our own decisions in the future. Kant is able to present this theory in his own words, “..immaturity that has all but become his nature. He has even become fond of this state and for the time being is actually incapable of using his own understanding, for no one has ever allowed him to attempt it.” (1) All of mankind becomes entirely too comfortable in the way of living life the way they were taught as adolescents. Although, everyone would like to leave this state of immaturity it is a comfortable stage in life to remain in. Only a small range of people are able to dust off their desire for comfort and step into a new realm of maturity. We are humans of routine, through various eras we have followed orders from those in higher or elder positions.
