In “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson, there has been many instances where symbolism is shown. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas. Often times authors use symbolism to represent something that is affecting their life, like Shirley Jackson.
One example of symbolism is the black box. In the story it says that “… much tradition as was represented by the black box” (Jackson1). This shows that the black box represents tradition. The black box has always been used for many years and it is a tradition that will carry on. The original box that was used for the lottery was a black box and the current box, which is very shabby now, is also a black box. Shirley Jackson probably picked the color black because black is the color of death.
