Bowen and Valiela (2007) looked into the effect of human populations and land uses in Waquoit Bay, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, U.S.A., and how nitrogen loading has changed over the years due to waste water, atmospheric deposition and fertilizer use. Bowen and Valiela (2007) found that nitrogen loading into Waquoit Bay has doubled over the years. According to Bowen and Valiela (2007), increase in nitrogen loading has led to eutrophication, which has affected biogeochemistry and ecosystem by causing increase in biomass of some organisms like phytoplankton and macroalgae whereas decrease in eelgrass (Zostera marina).
