Walt Whitman used extended metaphors in a poem to explain how americans took lincoln's death. A extended metaphor in this case is just walt whitman telling us how sad and happy americans were during the end of the war and after the assassination of abraham lincoln. Some examples of extended metaphors in walt whitman's poem are kind of ship terms for example walt whitman said “ The swaying mass, Their eager faces turning.” That just kind of states that the americans want to see lincoln and honor him for being the father of our country and winning the war and freeing the slaves. Another extended Metaphor is “The ship is anchored.” President Abe lincoln is dead and was assassinated at the time this poem was written and the poem is saying
