Viking Society: Viking Government Compared to Anglo-Saxon Government The Vikings are very well known in most of the world. In the United States there are places that have food similar to what the Viking ate, there are comic book characters that represent their religion, and there is even a state that has a football team named after them. Their influence is still present because they were such a force to be reckoned with, especially during the Viking era. The Vikings lived in a place where either they had the strength lo live each day or they died. Their society is a manifestation of that strength, and that is where they differ from other European societies at the time; the Vikings had to make a life in an unlivable place, while other societies, such as the Anglo-Saxons, did not. This difference is reflected in society, but one can tell a lot about how a society function by how they ran their government, and treated their women. The focus of this paper is to compare the Vikings to the Anglo-Saxons and see where their societies differed in government and women, and to understand why the differences happened. Societies reflect a lot about a country and the community, and it is an integral part in understanding how people functioned, but more importantly why they functioned that way. However, it is known that they ruled England for about 600 years, and never went back home, thus there are still people in Britain that have Anglo-Saxon ancestors. The Anglo-Saxons ruled the majority of Britain from 410 to 1066 A.D, which at that point Britain and other countries changed their political views dramatically. The Anglo-Saxon period coincides with the Viking Era, which began in 793 A.D to 1066
