Unit 10: Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways
C: Explore the factors that can affect the pathways and the rate of photosynthesis in plants
The following report is about the factors which can affect the pathways and the the rate of photosynthesis in plants. This report will cover what photosynthesis is , the factors which may affect photosynthesis in working poorly, light independant and dependant reaction. An investigation will be carried out which will include the factors that affect photosynthesis.
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is a process which occurs in plants when light energy needs to be transformed into chemical energy. 1. Oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis are the two process which photosynthesis has. The most common one out of the two is oxygenic photosynthesis, one of the reasons why it is more common is because it is seen in algae,…show more content… In the calvin cycle carbon atoms are used to make 3c sugars. As light dependant reaction takes place in the thylakoid membrane, the calvin cycle takes place in the stroma.
The calvin cycle is divided into 3 main sections:
Carbon fixation:
The first stage is called carbon fixation it is when a CO2 and a five carbon acceptor molecule (ribulose 1,5 bisphosphate) is combined. Six carbon compound is made and is split into to two sets of three carbon compounds. RuBP carboxylase or rubisco is the enzyme which is used to catalyse the reaction.
Reduction:
This is the second stage of the calvin cycle , Atp and Nadph are used are used to convert the 3 phosphoglyceric acid molecules in to the 3 carbon sugar glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate. Nadph contributes electrons to reduce a three carbon molecule to make glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate.
Regeneration:
The glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate either goes to make glucose or may be recycled to make more RuBP. The regeneration process requires Atp
