The first chapter of Undocumented by Aviva Chomsky was a very fascinating and informative read. Chomsky perfectly catalogues the events and factors that lead to the concept of ‘illegality’ in recent times, while pointing out some of its social and economic effects. Although what really intrigued me in this chapter was when it started talking about the uses of illegality, where she writes “While creating privilege for settlers was characteristic of settler colonial societies, the creation and use of the socially marginalized for labor was pretty much a universal of civilization.” (Chomsky 37). To me, it implies that civilization needed some form of inequality or dual labor market in order to reach the desired level of privilege and comfort that
