World War I had left Europe devastated and vast areas of it had been reduced to rubble. In 1918, due to lots of ill feelings against Germany for starting the war, Britain, France and the US decided on a peace settlement in 1919. The Treaty of Versailles, which the German delegates were forced to sign placed full blame for the war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. The treaty was to destroy Germany, and it included the loss of land, military restrictions, harsh financial reparations which were set at £6,600 million and bankrupt Germany’s economy. Germany had many objections to the treaty and thought that it was too harsh and unfair as they felt that they had been blamed for what the previous government had done.
