The Trans-Continental Railroad was built to connect the west coast with the east coast of the United States. Its purpose was to transport people and their goods faster and safer at an affordable price. Also the positive outcome of minimizing health risk with the construction of the railroad as to sailing the ocean passing through Panama. In 1845 Asa Whitney, an entrepreneur from New York announced a proposition to congress about federal funding the railroads. In 1860 an engineer by the name of Theodore Judah brought to the attention the tragedy of the passing of the "Donner Party".
