41) I agree with the book being described as a “novel of strong contemporary national significance” mainly because I disagree with the book not being demanding. Harper Lee uses a lot of symbolism in this book but the reader has to be very open minded while reading this book or else they wouldn’t be able to catch it. The main one is also the title, “Mockingbird. In the book, Miss Maudie explains to Scout “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy… but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” This is one of the first symbols that are shown to us. It is wrong to kill an innocent thing. Tom Robinson is black and Jem is white but they have both injured one of their arms permanently. This could represent that Jem is the wound that is the system of segregation inflicted on the white southerners and Tom is the wound for the black Southerners. However, Bob Ewell didn't succeed in killing Jem. In this case, Bob could be a symbol of the hatred that grew over time, due to the segregation. The hatred grew out of control eventually and killed the host, Bob. This proves that not only does segregation harm the college community but the way as well. The broken arm could also represent a helpless mockingbirds I cannot escape its predators. Tom was an innocent black man but the predator; Bob trapped him in the trial and ended up killing him. When Jem and Scout were being yelled at by Mrs. Dubose, they just thought she was a mean person. After Atticus told them what her intentions were, she turned out to be a decent person. When the town thought Dolphus Raymond was a wealthy drunk, Dill and Scout discovered his paper sack was simply Coca-Cola and he was a thoughtful and intelligent person. The most obvious one was Boo Radley; after he came out to save the children, scout finally realizes just another human with morals. Atticus can see everyone's good side because he believes that you have to look at their life from their perspective and you'll see the reasons for their actions. Atticus also sees everyone without prejudice. He did it with Mrs. Dubose. Even though she insults him, he respects her more than himself. At the trial, he did it to Mayella as well. He saw what environment she came from and realize she was being forced to say what she was
