What is courage? Courage is a topic in life that is sometimes hard to define. That is especially hard to define in To Kill a Mockingbird, with prejudice and the Great Depression going on at the same time. So, this essay is going to tell you who exemplified courage, what they did with their courage, the definition of it in the story, and how Harper Lee show her meaning of courage throughout select characters in the story. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, there are characters, multiple ones, who are important to the plot and story map. But there are some that are more important than others because, they are the characters that Jem, Scout, and Atticus interact with the most. So, let’s dive into the characters who show, or have the most amount of courage in the story. One of the main characters that has little interaction until the end of the story that shows courage is Arthur “Boo” Radley. One of the many ways he shows courage early in the story is by putting items inside the knothole of the tree, and by mending the hole in Jem's Pants, and then he hung them back up. This shows courage because he risks being seen, or hurt doing these things for the benefit of Jem and Scout, not himself. Later in the novel, he shows courage by protecting Jem and Scout by stabbing Bob Ewell, then letting Scout walk him home. These are some of the many ways that Boo shows courage. Another character that exemplifies courage is Scout. Scout shows courage by walking Boo home in the dark. She is then able to see life from Boo’s perspective. Another way she shows courage is by attending Tom Robinson’s trial when she is less than 10 years old, and doesn’t know what rape is. She shows great courage when Bob Ewell is accosting her and Jem by staying very, very calm.
