The Finches treat Calpurnia like she is family and with respect. Since Jem and Scout’s mother has passed, they look to Calpurnia as a mother figure in their lives. 8. Boo Radley is the mysterious neighbor who does not leave his home. They've never seen him and are very curious as to what he looks like. Mayella does not seem like a reliable source because she can’t remember the exact details of what happened. Because she can’t remember, all of her testimonies don’t add up exactly. After Atticus asks more and more questions, Mayella does not answer. “No, I don’t recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me” (248). Goes back on her word multiple times and changes the story, she is not a reliable source. Chapters 19-21: 70. Atticus thinks Bob Ewell harmed Mayella. 72. Mr. Gilmer acts upset when Tom Robinson says he felt sorry for Mayella because he doesn’t understand why Tom could feel bad for her. But Tom felt bad for her because he was a genuine man who realized that she is very lonely and comes from a troubled family. 74. When Scout and Dill leave the court room the truth that is revealed about Mr. Dolphus Raymond is that He’s not the town drunk, he only act’s that way so people won’t like him. 76. At the end of chapter 21, Reverend Sykes says, “Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father’s passin’.” This is so significant because even though Tom did not win the case, everyone who wanted him to has respect for Atticus for proving that Tom didn’t hurt Mayella.
