To Kill a Mockingbird: Movie vs. Novel Preferably, a novel and its film version can complement each other. However, novels can accomplish things that films cannot, and films can accomplish things that novels cannot. Also, film has limitations that a novel doesn’t have. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee and was made into a film in 1962, which also received many awards. Although the film projects the main events of the story, it is different from the novel because some characters are not as developed, dealings were altered, and events are left out. In the film, some characters are not as developed while others are like Atticus and Scout. Atticus is not as developed in the novel as he is in the film. The focus of the film is of Atticus and the case because the narration is done differently by Scout; it is only presented to set the mood of a scene. In the novel, Scout’s narration is used throughout to tell the whole story. The film does not show the viewers a strong sense of first-person narration. In the book, Mrs. Dubois is addicted to morphine and while she is trying to recover from her addiction, Jem is told to go to her house to read to her. Jem and Scout’s interaction is missing in the film; they have no contact with her. The movie never shows the occasions in the classroom with Miss Caroline, so the viewer is only left to imagine what she tells Scout and predict how the episodes with the students (and Miss Caroline) occurred. “Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me anymore, it would interfere with my reading.” This quote is expanded by actually narrating what happened in the book while the viewer only sees Scout tell Atticus what Miss Caroline told her.
