Rikki-Tikki is a mongoose in the story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling. Throughout the story he is almost always being a kind friend, when he’s not he is being protective of his friends and his family. In the end he comes out braver and stronger than before. Overall, Rikki-Tikki is a intelligent, curious and protective mongoose.
First, Rikki-Tikki shows he’s intelligent by being aware of what’s going on around him. In the story he listens and he hears the “faintest scratch-scratch in the world”(21). He gets up from where he is and wanders towards where the sound is coming from. He finds Nag and Nagaina talking and knows he must get rid of them and stop their devious plan. He waits and listens, finally Nag comes and coils himself around the water jar. Rikki-Tikki is a young mongoose and he doesn’t know how get rid of Nag without injuring himself. He decides that he must attack him by the head. He quietly creeps towards him and without the slightest hesitation he manages to attach his jaws onto Nag’s head. Nag is a very powerful snake and he does not give up without a fight. He thrashes Rikki-Tikki left and right. Suddenly Nag is still. Rikki is hesitant about letting go.
