The internet, one of the most freely used sources that everybody uses. The one place where there should be laws and regulation, there is very little. Net Neutrality is not a bill passed by Congress and signed by the President, yet created by the FCC back in 2010. The gist of the rule is that broadband-access providers, wired and wireless, cannot block their consumer’s devices, applications or services. It would cause unreasonable discrimination for offering better access for people who can pay more. Without Net Neutrality, providers can make a fast and a slow lane for consumers. The rules were in place so there would be a level playing field for consumers. The consumer can make their own choice about what service they can get. (FCC) The rules would protect free expression; to promote competition; to increase confidence in the marketplace by providing greater certainty for all stakeholders regarding federal policy in America. Copps wrote “Allowing gigantic corporations to exercise unfettered control over Americans’ access to the Internet not only creates risks to technological innovation and economic growth, but it poses a real threat to freedom of speech and the future of your democracy.” (Hazlett) The rules set by the FCC in 2010 would restrict how companies, for example Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon, can price bargains and bundles that would discriminate applications and the general user. A general example of this would imagine AT&T for their internet providers would charge extra for YouTube, if YouTube was contracted with Comcast. It would cause general upset for the consumers on just paying more for the same content that YouTube produces.
