This might be the key to writing a successful novel or it might just be the reason authors begin to show a sense of similarity within their literature. Similarities or techniques noticeable within many famous authors literature, Zora Neale Hurston is no exception to this. Hurston like many authors lets her life impact her writing in a way that such themes of gender roles and social class within society are constantly found showing up in her writing and are needed to get a greater understanding of what is there to be discovered. Writer Otis Ferguson wrote a review on October 13, 1937 describing exactly that. He wrote "it isn't that this novel is bad, but that it deserves to be better. In execution it is too complex and wordily pretty, even dull..." (Ferguson) I completely agree with Ferguson, in the way that Zora Neale Hurston made her novel too complex. Their Eyes Were Watching God is a great novel, but there's too much happening within it. Between the main character Janie Crawford's, sensational experience underneath a pear tree in her backyard to three marriages to three different types of men. The story can be hard to follow and understand at times, let alone not to mention the dialogue in which the character’s speak. The characters speak with in uneducated tone which makes it hard to understand what they are saying to each other at times throughout the novel. I'm not trying to sit here and tear the novel down, it's a great read and Hurston does a great job with it. However I was confused at times and had to reread specific parts to achieve a better understanding and fully grasp what was…show more content…
In her essay How It Feels To Be Colored Me she really get in to her roots and talks about how slavery not only was a part of her history but that she in a way appreciates it because it gave her civilization that she otherwise would not have had. Hurston’s African American heritage plays a big part in her writing and it can be seen in both in her most famous piece of writing Their Eyes Were Watching God and one of her many short stories Sweat. Though critic’s may arise, Zora Neale Hurston was a great writer and her literature will continue to inspire future writers as well as provide great reading pieces for active readers and English students around the
