Theatre Technicians deal with so many things that people don’t know about. Within the theatre world, technicians, or techies, are viewed as those who stay in the shadows, behind the scenes and make sure any and all problems are avoided. The pieces of art that are displayed on stage between: scenery, lights, sound, costumes, props, all have one defining word, stagecraft. When someone hears the word stagecraft they do not necessarily think about the style of a costume or the design of lights and sound. They generally think of carpentry and building materials being put together. Stagecraft is the underlining term for a show that a theatre technician has made whole. “For most men the design responsibility includes not only the supervision of all technical aspects of the production program but also concern for the upkeep of the facility and its equipment” and “in addition to duties connected with actual production, most designer/technical directors continue to teach academic courses. The technical faculty still teach in general theatre, technical theatre, and general speech or English areas”(Batcheller 475). As we see the job of a technical director is a huge one and if anything has a problem or decides to break down the first one on the scene is usually the technical director, or TD. Most people rarely see the technical director for more than ten minutes at a time usually because they always have something to work on or someone else to talk to about the design. Another description of a technical director provided by Edward C. Cole is, “In short, the technical director is a craftsman, and if possible, an engineer, in service of the scene designer, and together they serve the director and the playwright”(Cole 222). Technical directors work with technicians and show technicians how exactly everything should be run. But a technical director is not a stage manager. A technical director keeps everything from breaking down in the technical aspect while a stage manager arranges and organizes both cast and technicians together. They had the people but lacked the special effects, microphones, lights, and many other things that are present in theatre. However, the Greeks made theatre work through their own resources, which are still present in some of the basic forms of carpentry today. “Theatre emerged from myth, ritual, and ceremony. Early societies perceived connections between certain actions performed by the group or leaders in the group and the desired results of the whole society. These actions moved from habit, to tradition, and then on to ceremony and ritual. The formulation of these actions, and the consequent repetition and rehearsal, broke the ground for theatre”(Robinson 1). Technicians were not a big term in the times of Greece. People back then were architects who built stadiums and arenas. Architects were tasked with building sets for a background while everyone waited for the sun to start rising in the distance so light could be born. Actors projected their voices over the audiences and wind so they could be heard, and they made their own costumes from the clothes they had in their possession. Actors and architects were the first form of theatre. Architects began making bigger and better sets moving away from full-fledged architecture and into technicians of the theatre realm.
