The Yellow Wallpaper Symbolism

173 Words1 Page
In the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Perkins Gilman, Gilman uses symbolism to show the progression of the woman's mental state through the wallpaper in her bedroom, and this begins to develop the thematic idea that humans are directly influenced by their surroundings. In the beginning of the story the woman is disgusted by the wallpaper and asks for it to be taken down. This represents her being slightly insane and treatable. Slowly her hate of the wallpaper and insanity increase. By the end of the short story the woman starts to believe that there are other woman trapped behind the wallpaper and she is one of them that has escaped. She now wants to keep the wallpaper. This shows that the woman is completely insane and was now untreatable.
