October sky is the true story of Homer Hickam, a young man growing up in a 1950s coal mining town who dreams of him and his close friends launching rockets into space instead of working their life away in a loud dusty coal mine. Although October Sky focuses on the hardships of middle class America and the challenges of adolescence, the true themes of October sky are learning to accept others for who they are and the importance of family. The people in coalwood had a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, but homer didn’t have much support from his family especially from his father who thinks rockets are garbage and are a waste of time he wanted his son to focus on graduating school and coming to work for him down in the coal mine. Quentin the nerd of his class knew everything possible about rockets he wanted to build a rocket of his own until he was sought out by homer who asked him for help with building the rockets. He is known as the brains in the group. Roy lee is homer’s best friend from their childhood, he is known as the love master of coalwood, he tries to give homer a few pointers on things about girls. Roy is also the only one of the rocket boys with a car, so for most of the time he is designated to drive the boys for transportation he also has a good knowledge of communicating with others to get the help of people around the community, he helps the boys get moonshine from the moonshiner in town John eye who provides the boys with the alcohol needed for their special propellant they call
