Discoveries play a transformative role in individuals and leads them to a new and greater understanding of themselves. In Shakespeare’s 1610 comedy The Tempest, the discovery of love and new values transforms the characters and allows them to gain a new and greater understanding of themselves. Similarly, in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2001 film Amélie, the unexpected discovery of a childhood treasure belonging to a previous occupant of her apartment leads Amélie to discover new values and love, which ultimately leads her to a new and greater understanding of herself. Love is a catalyst for change. It plays a transformative role in individuals and allows them to gain a new understanding of themselves. When she meets Ferdinand and falls in love with him at first sight, she becomes more independent and develops her own set of values. She is willing to break the social conventions and help Ferdinand, even if she thinks she is going to get into trouble with her father: “I’ll bear your logs for the while. Pray give me that;/I’ll carry it to the pile.” The rhyme of “while” and “pile” reveals Miranda’s empathetic and compassionate nature and her willingness to break the social norms for Ferdinand. The monosyllables emphasise Miranda’s adamant attitude, which suggests that she is confident about her choices and that she is starting to develop her independence and understand herself. Miranda also innocently declares her love to Ferdinand, which transgresses the social conventions: “I would not wish any companion in the world but you.” The hyperbole and emphatic tone reiterates Miranda’s innocence and love for Ferdinand, and shows the strength of her conviction to her values. Through love, Miranda gradually breaks away from Prospero and starts to value her inner voice; she starts to become her own person: “But I prattle/something
