Many authors use special literary techniques in their writing to capture and hold the reader's attention. The goal for an author is to intrigue and attach the reader to the works. William Faulkner and Edgar Allan Poe successfully used a variety of literary techniques to develop the atmosphere in their stories The Tell Tale Heart and A Rose For Emily. Their writing techniques grasp the reader’s attention and create an interesting evocative mood and page turning stories. The Tell Tale Heart and A Rose For Emily were written and structured in two distinct writing styles using different literary techniques while still creating an eerie gothic feeling. Poe holds the reader's attention with a first person narrator, writing in short, choppy sentence fragments and repeating words which allows the reader to feel the anxiety of the speaker… “Indeed, the illness only made my mind, my feelings, my senses stronger, more powerful.” (Poe 1) Faulkner's sentences are longer and full of description... “It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies.” (Faulkner 1) He creates mood and attention by describing the characters and setting in detail, which builds a mental picture for the reader, keeping them interested. He builds suspense by not having a nervous narrator but by foreshadowing and dropping clues for the reader to think about. Despite these different approaches their theme of gothic horror and a suspenseful atmosphere are effectively developed using very different writing techniques. The combination of these techniques holds the reader's attention because it creates an interesting story and anxious environment. If authors such as Poe and Faulkner did not use these styles, they would lose an audience's attention quickly and their works would become dull and
