London, in the mid-late 1300s, was beginning to emerge as a major European city, the first of its kind in England. People from all different walks of life would come into the city to partake in the new, vibrant trade market and interact with locals. The vast influx of merchants that came into London was the first sign of a rising middle class, and with a rising middle class comes people who are literate that do not descended from nobility. However all books that were written were meant only to appeal to the noble class or clergy, as historically those two classes were predominantly literate compared to the rest of the world.
