Guns are devices that people use to feel safe. It is a gadget that police use to keep order and for emergencies, but guns are also killing people. The present gun laws in America are not enough to keep people from dying. Other countries, like Switzerland, have restrictive gun laws and their gun violence rates are immensely lower. The American government needs to learn from them. Isn’t all the mass shooting and gun violence enough to show the government how much America needs more restrictive gun laws? Americans need to help make a change to keep more innocent people from dying. Too many lives are being taken because of gun violence. How is this happening you ask? Well, one reason is because legally owned guns are frequently stolen or sold to criminals. A June 2013 Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported that between 2005 and 2010, 1.4 million guns were stolen from US homes during property crimes, in burglaries and car theft. Ian Ayres, JD, PhD, and John J. Donohue, JD, PhD, Professors of Law at Yale Law School and Stanford Law School stated that “Even if the gun owner had a permit to carry a concealed weapon and would never use it in furtherance of a crime, is it likely that the same can be said for the burglar who steals the gun?" Some civilians own military-grade firearms, which can easily kill people. President Ronald Reagan and others included the AR-15 in the assault weapons ban of 1994 (which expired on Sep. 13, 2004). Mentally and emotionally unstable people should have a harder time to get a gun. The New York Times says that, “In an analysis of some 350 mass killers going back a century, about 22 percent were found to likely have had psychosis; the rate in the general population is closer to 1 percent.” According to CNN, “Nikolas Cruz, a school shooter passed the FBI's background check to be able to purchase his AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle in the past year.
