The polis came into being a form of political organization to deal with the aftermath of the diminishing dominance of the system where there was a paramount basileus in charge of the other lower basileis. Moving away from the chief system because “chiefs who did not deal with the conflicts of [population growth] created would not last long, but those who did resolve them became much more powerful than Dark Age basileis.” (Morris: pg. 71) allowed the chiefs to find solutions that dealt with the conflicts such as inequality among social class and unequal land distribution that came with the increase in population.
